Confusion about direction in life

שו”תCategory: generalConfusion about direction in life

Hello Rabbi, I am a young man and will soon be released from the military, and I have been struggling for a long time with the question of continuing my academic studies. I mainly studied Torah in high school and my matriculation is not encouraging, and I also have no desire to go back to studying mathematics, mainly because I have no desire for degrees and work in real fields. From what I have checked, I am only interested in fields such as the Bible, the Land of Israel, Jewish thought, and the like. I really like and have always liked to research these topics, and I have invested less in practical skills. So I am not attracted to any work or occupations without a degree. I am quite stressed because of this hesitation, whether I should invest in what I do love and hope that I will become a researcher or lecturer (and of course take a considerable risk that I will be left with nothing) or not take the risk and force myself to develop in other directions that do not appeal to me, but risk finding myself working in something simple and missing out on the skills and passion that I do have.

The chance of becoming a researcher or lecturer in academia is virtually zero. Don’t count on it. But I assume there are other jobs in these fields. As a general rule, I recommend going for what you love, and eventually finding some kind of job, even if not exactly in the profession you studied. Although it also depends on how much you suffer from studying a profession that has a reasonable income. If the suffering isn’t great, I would combine a practical subject with something from the humanities that interests you.
