Faith, understanding and knowledge

If understanding is faith, why in Rambam and perhaps in other places, doesn’t it say to understand? It says to believe and then to know. As I understand it, after you choose to believe, then you have knowledge.

What difference does it make whether it says believe, understand, or know? The same meaning applies to our case.
