Fasting on the Tenth of Tevet
Hello Rabbi,
I would love to hear your opinion regarding the question about fasting on the 10th of Tevet.
There are four fasts that relate to the destruction of the Temple. Traditionally, each fast represents a stage on the path to destruction.
My question is that since Jerusalem is built up today (physically – number of residents, yeshivahs, businesses, etc.) with the exception of the Temple – is it not possible to cancel some of the fasts (for example, the 10th of Tevet)?
Do you see a fundamental theological issue in keeping the fast or is it simply a matter of tradition and halachic ruling?
My difficulty is mainly with the answer that says that “next year in Jerusalem built” refers to the Temple, Jerusalem above, and until it is built there is no change in status (beyond a certain piyoot that a certain part of the public interprets as “without being built, it sits.”
Thank you very much,
