God and Logic

שו”תCategory: philosophyGod and Logic
asked 5 years ago

Hello Rabbi,
You claim in several places that God is subject to the laws of logic, and that they are not laws in the same sense as the laws of physics, because no one enacted them.
The relationship between God and logic can be described in 3 ways:

  1. God enacted the laws of logic (as mentioned, you disagree with that)
  2. The laws of logic preceded God, and God operates within them.
  3. The laws of logic are an essential part of God, ‘acting according to the laws of logic’ is an essential attribute of Him.

In 2, there is of course a theological problem (where did the laws of logic emerge from, how does something exist before God, etc.).
Do you believe in option 3, or another option?

In other words: the laws of logic exist. The question is, what is their reason?

thanks

I think you just asked a similar question (was that you?). Why not continue there? As I answered there, the laws of logic were not created and they are not applicable, and therefore there is no point in discussing them and the time of their creation. They are also not part of it because they are not something that exists. They describe the necessary relationships between ideas and things. God did not create the idea that a wooden table is made of wood and not iron. Nor can He change that.

So it must have been someone else. Sorry.
