Hametz in hospitals
Hello Rabbi,
What is the rabbi’s opinion on the issue of chametz in hospitals: Should it be prohibited by law?
thanks
I don’t see it as wrong, but it’s not necessary either. As long as they make sure that the patients who are interested don’t eat chametz, there’s no reason to forbid others from eating it. It seems to me that they also don’t check whether someone brings pork into the hospital.
Although I do not see this as wrong, because concern for the Jewish character of hospitals and public institutions is legitimate. I think that examining files is out of proportion (because it does not harm people but only preserves character). It is enough to state that it is forbidden.
Why do you think concern for the character of public places is legitimate? Even if it violates individual freedom… (Isn’t it part of the separation of religion and state that the rabbi supports this approach? Or does the rabbi see this as a national value rather than a religious one?
Thank you!
I am in favor of separation, but I think that anyone who believes otherwise is legitimate even if I don't agree with them. There are religious symbols that have become national symbols. Therefore, it is legitimate to want them to be preserved in society and public places. As mentioned, I myself do not think so.
Does the rabbi still hold this position?
