How much should a state finance?

Greetings to the rabbi.
Following the uproar over ‘The Jews Are Coming’ and the demand to stop funding them, I wondered to what extent the state should fund television in general? Between culture and entertainment, but then another question occurred to me: to what extent should the state fund anything that goes beyond the practical needs of humanity, such as religious services, television, building playgrounds, community center activities, or even planting trees on the sides of roads…
What is the Rabbi’s opinion on the matter?

I don’t have a clear position on these matters. There is logic in complete privatization, especially when society is very divided and chaotic and there is no agreement on what is important/appropriate and what is not. On the other hand, there are projects that will not be implemented without government funding, and yet it is important that they be possible on the ground. Among the examples you gave, you can see implications: For example, who will finance planting trees on the sides of the roads? This is a market failure in a sense, since it is important for everyone to have it, but no one will finance it. Beyond all of this, debates like the one surrounding the Jews are coming would not occur if there were no government funding, which is a shame. Joint projects, even if there is controversy about them, constitute a basis on which positions and disagreements can be clarified. Otherwise, we will live even more as a collection of separate bubbles. I don’t have a criterion or a clear line.
