Is Moshe Mendelssohn evil??
In honor of Rabbi Shalom
What does the Rabbi think of Moshe Mendelssohn? Is he evil?
I read a book about him by some professor and I couldn’t come to the conclusion that he was evil.
thanks
I didn’t look into it in depth, but from what I know, he was simply ahead of his time. The ideas he expressed then, which sounded outdated and even rustic, are now quite banal and deeply rooted in Orthodoxy (usually modern). Nothing to do with wickedness. On the contrary, I get the impression that he was a great scholar and a great thinker. By the way, he was probably one of the most talented of his generation, even in the estimation of non-Jews. He won first prize from the Prussian Academy of Sciences for his essay on metaphysics, with Kant taking second prize.
You are 100% right
There are people who, if they had been born later, would have been leaders of their generation, but since they were the first to break through, they are forever outcasts, which is a shame.
