Locust Kosher

שו”תLocust Kosher
asked 4 years ago

Hello,
I know that the rabbi is wary of eating meat or eggs for moral reasons. Today the world is moving towards insects and they are already being marketed in supermarkets in the Western world.
I saw that recently there is also awareness of the matter in the Haredi world and Rabbi Mahfoud is “marketing” it.
What do you think?
1- Are only those who have a tradition allowed to eat (my friend says they ate in Morocco, for example) – it seems to me that everyone is allowed, tradition helps to know what is the permitted variety, but according to the Torah it is permitted, so why not?
2- How is it in practice, after all, there is no slaughter, there is no meat in milk… so we just buy the permitted varieties and eat?
Thank you and best wishes,
Abraham

The matter of tradition appears in the Poskim, but I have never understood why it is relevant. As with everything, we have our own opinions and can decide based on them. Those who are content can use tradition. If in your opinion this is permissible and you think their identification is correct, then enjoy. I didn’t understand the question about slaughtering and meat in milk. You rightly wrote that grasshoppers don’t have all of that, so what’s the problem?

Of course, animal cruelty has its place. I only wrote about kashrut.
