Question about a Sukkah balcony

שו”תCategory: HalachaQuestion about a Sukkah balcony
asked 7 years ago

Hello Rabbi,
With the permission of the Rabbi, I am asking by email so that I can attach a relevant picture.

I have a problem mentioned in “Mikrai Kodesh” (in the picture I attached. It’s simply a good summary of the problem and the proposed solution mentioned in the poskim) regarding a sukkah balcony – on one axis of the sukkah I only have between 4 and 7 tefahim that are not covered. As mentioned there in the book (in the picture attached), they suggested a solution to this by making a partition in the appropriate place (reducing the sukkah so that the unfit thatch is less than 3 tefahim, and therefore joins the kosher thatch).
I actually bought a “Sukkah Nahalim” which is larger of course, and I want to add the required partition in the appropriate place.
There is a picture in the book for demonstration where the partition is made of wood. The problem is that it seems difficult to me to put up such a partition (and to be honest, I have two “left-handed” hands). I asked if it is possible, instead of a wooden partition, to make it from ropes and using “plywood” (at appropriate distances and reaching the required height of course), as one can make a regular wall of a sukkah..? On the surface, I don’t see this as a problem, but I want to make sure I’m not missing something..

Thank you very much in advance and Happy Holidays,

If I understand correctly, this is a kosher sukkah of 5 tefahim, and you want to add two more tefahim that are not valid to make it 7 (= kosher sukkah rate). Indeed, a partition is a possible solution, and a partition for the bods is as good for this as any other partition. This is your sukkah partition, and all partition laws apply to it as well. Happy Holidays,
