Rabbinic instructions
No one expects you to know what goes on behind the scenes in Haredi society.
But if you decide to write about the Haredi society and name names, it would be a good idea to clarify the details first.
The true story, known to anyone with a little knowledge, may be even sadder than the picture you painted, but it deserves to be told accurately –
From the beginning, Rabbi Edelstein and Rabbi Landau instructed to listen to the authorities, but they feared that a frontal war against Rabbi Kanievsky would cause the Kanievsky family to turn Rabbi Kanievsky’s opinion into a flag and launch a holy war against the authorities.
The first letter, which stated that the yeshiva had not been closed, etc., was a kind of compromise when in practice, in the Ponivz yeshiva, for example, the students were ordered to study in rooms and two days later they were ordered to close the yeshiva. And again, not in a dramatic way so as not to enter into a war with Kanievsky.
The letter from the Ministry of Health to Rabbi Edelstein is also an “invited” letter intended to indirectly neutralize the members of the Kanievsky family, who even after Rabbi Kanievsky ordered not to pray in the minyan, claimed that the instruction was only directed at Bnei Brak.
It is sad and shocking that while a global pandemic is raging, small political considerations are being considered, but in retrospect it was proven that in this way they finally succeeded in harnessing Rabbi Kanievsky to the cart.
Even if you’re right, it doesn’t change the picture.
It is not clear why the rabbi excludes himself from the rabbis in this matter.
The common denominator of all the rabbis involved is that they understand nothing and nothing in biology and medicine, viruses and epidemics. Ignorance reigns supreme and whoever is more ignorant in these matters reaches a higher rank in the hierarchy of the sages. They all also specialized in extremely sharp idle chatter in the laws of money, but when it comes to simplifying the laws of souls, they are when the urbanite gropes in the dark, they have not the slightest clue what and how and why.
Stupidity is celebrated. And everyone who is greater than his friend is even greater than him.
So those great sages do what they would always do in emergency situations, use the weapon of the Day of Judgment, mass prayers, during an epidemic … the stupidity of the fires. And there is no excuse here.
And so when a body like the Ministry of Health comes along and makes a fuss, all those in the cities who send their flocks to die accept their instructions without demanding, without investigating, and without asking who said it, and why he said it, and maybe it's not even true.
And people will continue to die, and all those rabbis are already old and already in the group with the risk factors.
And as we already see in New York, many are dying.
So continue to pray a lot and continue to argue about whether or not they violated the Ministry of Health's instructions.
