Secular marriage to a gentile

שו”תCategory: HalachaSecular marriage to a gentile
asked 7 years ago

Peace be upon you, my teacher and rabbi,
The marriage of Tzachi Halevi and Lucy Aharish raised a question in me:
Should a Jew who does not observe Halacha have a problem marrying a Gentile?
May you be blessed with all the blessings of the Lord.

I think it would be better if you asked him. From a halakhic perspective, he probably isn’t bothered. From a moral perspective, I don’t see any problem with it. What remains is the national aspect, and on that, you should ask him whether it bothers him or not. Probably not (or love outweighs nationalism).

Interesting, I did ask assuming that he wasn't interested in Halacha, but you surprised me with the national consideration. Is there a side that a Frenchman wouldn't marry an Englishman because of the national consideration? Sorry for the exaggeration for the sake of humor, but if a Jerusalemite marries a Tel Avivian, is that municipal treason?

It's municipal treason if you see value in remaining a Tel Avivian or Jerusalemite. And it's national treason if you see value in remaining Jewish. If not - then in all cases, no.
