The children of the water
Hello Rabbi,
I recently heard that Prof. Chaim Sheba was misleading women who sought abortions and would inject them with a shot of water and say that it would cause a miscarriage. By the time the women found out, it was already too late to abort. I asked if such a thing was morally permissible in order to prevent a miscarriage. Supposedly, there is a fetus here whose mother is “pursuing” it, so it seems permissible and even appropriate to me, right?
Is this from the video you sent me?
I think it definitely is. There is a persecuting law here and you come to save the persecuted (in a situation where there is no justification for overthrowing). I still wouldn’t recommend it because it would be called a no-no, and in the end it would do more harm than good.
Yes, it's from this video:
By the way, in what situations is abortion justified?
If the fetus is about to die or if the mother is about to die, and perhaps even enter into serious health danger.
Beyond that, when the fetus is very young (a few days old) there are approaches that do not yet see it as a person. I think that since there is no sharp line, it is wrong to make an artificial line, and one should be stricter with each fetus at every stage. But in this case, whoever thinks otherwise does not hold an unfounded position in his opinion, and therefore perhaps it is not appropriate or necessary to impose my position on him.
What do you think about a fetus with severe defects? I don't mean during the eighth and ninth months.
A difficult problem. I tend to think that there is no permission to kill a fetus. Although if it is expected to suffer severe suffering (not difficulty and costs), there may be a place to allow it, like suicide.
