The future of Judaism

Hello Rabbi Mikhi, I read your letter to the Rosh Yeshiva of your son, which was published here on the site. Its content and insights add to other concerns and questions that have been on my mind recently… It is clear that the general state of religion is very bleak… There are very few places (like your site) where it is truly possible to discuss the principles of faith and religion in a truly free and open manner. On the other hand, it is clear to me that the overwhelming majority of Jews who are defined as religious and even as scholars of Torah will view the site and the questions that arise here, and even more so the answers that are answered as heresy and a betrayal of the Torah, etc. For me, as a religious person pursuing truth, the site is a place of comfort in a sea of nonsense and vanity, sloganeering and superficiality that surrounds me in the flow of my life (work, community, family, friends) and I have no one to talk to… And so I ask, is there hope for true Judaism? For true faith? For a correct and mature attitude towards our sources???? The situation only seems to be deteriorating… The good and critical minds are leaving us. Most converts are motivated by emotion and find solace in the mystical aspect of Judaism. They certainly won’t come to your site…….what can we do??????

Hello, my father. I agree with the general sentiment, but I’m probably more optimistic than you. First, society is never a collection of philosophers and thinking people. And neither is religious society in general. On the contrary, I think that in religious society there is more thought than outside, but it has too narrow boundaries. Secondly, as an anarchist I see value in conservative restraints that will stop thinking in its tracks. Ultimately, there needs to be a balance between the rational heretics and the wall-guarding conservatives. What can be done? To inspire and awaken, and to hope for the best. And most importantly, not to be afraid at all.
