The purpose of the commandments

שו”תCategory: faithThe purpose of the commandments
asked 2 years ago

Hello Rabbi Michi,
I am an observant Jew and consider myself obligated to fulfill God’s commandments as expressed in Halacha.
I ask myself for whom or what I am keeping the commandments. Is the purpose to build something in me (I am not clear what, but perhaps the very act of obeying God is valuable and makes me a “God-fearer” who has value in and of itself), that is: is it for me or is the purpose of keeping the commandments merely for some other purpose?

The duty is derived from the duty to obey God’s command. This is the purpose of existence. The purpose of the command is the goal that He set and wanted to achieve. I don’t know what it is.
