The Ten Sons of Haman – Oh, I mean, Rabbi Papa

To the Rabbi,
At the end of tractates, it is customary to recite the “Hadran” version, which includes a list of the ten sons of Papa (most of whom were not the sons of Rav Papa). This is an ancient custom, and Rav Hai Gaon already referred to it in his responsa, but its meaning is unclear (and the Rabbi of Medan once said: “I know of twenty reasons for reading the Book of Ruth on Shavuot, and only one reason for reading the Book of Esther on Purim”). The Rema and the Rashal have offered all sorts of ideas, and the mind is not comfortable with them.
I once heard you joke that in studying proficiency, you learn page 3 in order to forget page 2, page 4 in order to forget page 3, and so on. But when you get to the last page, what do you do to forget it? You say the encore, which is why it says before it, “Let him say this and it will help him forget.”
It is well known and famous that the rabbi’s sermons and most of his sermons are about studying and not about expertise, and therefore I do not know how much our rabbi is accustomed to conducting a ‘siyom’, so I will not ask what his honor does with this himself. My question is: Is there any value in conducting a siyom (beyond the exemption from the fast of firstborns), and to what extent should one adhere to the Hadran text?
Thanks in advance 🙂

The closing is a kind of party. What is said at the closing is a custom like any other. I really don’t understand why the names of the ten sons of Rabbi Papa are said. Like any strange custom, if it bothers you, you can certainly give it up.
