Torah study

שו”תCategory: HalachaTorah study
asked 4 years ago

Hello.
A person who has the means to study Torah all day but feels that he would rather go to study for a degree or work in a non-Torah job. Is there a problem with this from a halachic perspective? Does it nullify the MA of Dudbrat Bem?
That is, someone who is not forced to leave the kollel and can also continue to study, and if he continues then he will study not because he will push the time away, but because he feels more like doing something else and studying is a bit boring for him.

I don’t think there is a prohibition here. You should try your best to learn, within the constraints. Boredom and other desires (especially if they are positive) can be considered constraints. A heart knows its own bitterness, and only you know how significant it is to you.
See my article here: https://mikyab.net/%D7%9B%D7%AA%D7%91%D7%99%D7%9D/%D7%9E%D7%90%D7%9E%D7%A8%D7%99%D7%9D/%D7%9E%D7%91%D7%98-%D7%A2%D7%9C-%D7%9C%D7%99%D7%9 E%D7%95%D7%93-%D7%AA%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%94-%D7%9C%D7%A0%D7%A9%D7%99%D7%9 D-%D7%95%D7%9C%D7%9E%D7%93%D7%A0%D7%95%D7%AA-%D7%A0%D7%A9%D7%99%D7%AA

Thanks
What did you mean by other positive desires? What is defined as positive or non-positive desires in the context of going to work?

מיכי Staff replied 4 years ago

Desires to broaden one's horizons, to become educated, to make a living from the works of one's hands, these are positive desires. A desire simply to nullify Torah or engage in nonsense are less positive.

Sorry for the rambling.
1. Is broadening horizons in the sciences of herta (as you say) called broadening horizons or engaging in nonsense?
Really a yeshiva investigation, right??
2. Why is broadening horizons really considered a constraint for abrogating the Torah?

I referred you to the article above.
Just because I don't find these topics interesting doesn't mean that others aren't valuable. In particular, even if it's not science, certain parts of these fields still have value.
