Watching entertainment programs that make fun of/demean people
Hello Rabbi
Do you think there is a halachic or moral problem with watching shows like Eretz Neheder that make fun of people personally? Even though there is understandable criticism, it is sometimes accompanied by ridicule and belittling of the personality in a way that is very unpleasant for that person and their family.
And in general, do you think it is appropriate for a civilized society to have such programs? Again, I emphasize that the question is not about criticism and ridicule of actions or statements, but rather a derogatory portrayal of personality.
I don’t remember all the details right now, but in my opinion, the ridicule is usually directed at behavior, personality, and values, and not just at traits (like being fat or thin). There may be small exceptions, but in general, this is my impression.
In my opinion, in a civilized society, programs like this are necessary, and not just permitted. In my opinion, it’s an excellent program, and sometimes downright ingenious.
