What did they do with tefillin during biblical times?
Rabbi Shalom.
I have a very thoughtful question!
Tefillin is a significant mitzvah in everyday religious life.
But we never thought about what they did with them during the time of Moses? David? Etc.
I mean, we put them down and pray.
But 2500 years ago there were no three prayers a day. It is not clear what they would have done with the tefillin. Was it some kind of amulet that was added to the Israelites in ancient times and the Sages in the Second Temple period gave it the status of an actual mitzvah?
I didn’t understand the question. Even today, people don’t put on tefillin three times a day. On the contrary, there were times and people who probably wore tefillin all day regardless of prayers, and nowadays it’s been reduced to Shacharit.
What is this about an amulet that has been adopted throughout the generations? It is a commandment from the Torah, “And they shall be as drops between your eyes.”
