What is the content of morality?
Rabbi Mickey,
After reading some of your articles, I come to the conclusion that morality has objective validity. What I don’t understand is what are the moral ‘laws’? What is the content of morality itself?
I agree. There are things throughout history that have changed regarding the initial perception and intuition about morality. Were they simply wrong and immoral?
Furthermore, what can you say to a person who agrees that morality is objective but thinks it has nothing to do with murdering people? Of course, this is an extreme example, but it is an illustration of more ‘simple’ things that are debatable if they fall under the umbrella of morality.
How can we know what falls under the umbrella of morality? And does the umbrella of morality change between people/society/throughout history?
Thank you very much.
What’s the problem with saying they were wrong? Morality evolves just as science evolves. And why does the fact that there are debates change anything? There are also debates in science and economics and in general. so what?
I don't really understand the analogy between science and morality. There is no claim that they are objective or binding. In contrast to morality.
Debates are different because they give an indication. In science and economics, you can prove claims to one side and say that the other is wrong. Can you also say the same about morality?
I can argue that morality requires you not to murder, and you can argue the opposite, that morality requires you to murder. And we will both connect this to objective morality. Is there a way to prove that any of us is behaving immorally?
And if there is no way to prove it, then even though the validity of morality is objective, in practice each person applies it as he sees reality and gives it a subjective meaning.
I don't understand this strange discussion. You could say that mathematics says that 2+3= 17. You can argue anything, so what? Who said there needed to be a way to prove something? Indeed, every person applies it as he sees fit. And so?
