empiricism
What gave rise to empiricism was the statement that what a person thinks does not mean that it is true about the world.
If so, why don’t we say the same thing about cognition? (Like Berkeley)
And why did the epistemological view catch on if the same could be said about cognition?
The assumption is that cognition is based on connection with the world. To doubt this is just skepticism. But thinking happens inside the head and there is no reason to assume that it is adapted to what is happening in the world itself. Therefore, this skepticism is called for there.
By the way, I agree with this skepticism, and therefore I think there is a cognitive component to thinking as well. Without it, skepticism is really necessary.
