A question about ethics

שו”תCategory: moralA question about ethics
asked 6 years ago

Does one have to be a moral person to be a professor/expert in ethics? I’m not asking whether one has to be moral (everyone should be moral), but whether an immoral person can be an expert in ethics. Is ethics simply facts about the world, and then anyone can arrive at these facts (maybe even a computer), like in physics, for example?
thanks

I don’t think there is an expert on ethics. There is an expert on ethical positions (knowing what someone thought and why). Some people are more skilled at ethical thinking, meaning that their arguments will be more convincing to the public. It is possible that an ethical person has a more reliable sense of what is right and what is wrong. I am not sure about that.
