On morality and law
Hello, Your Honor,
If our obligation to the Halacha command stems from a moral motive, can’t it be argued that all the commandments we perform (which stem from the obligation to the command) are moral?
There’s a point here that I’m missing.
I’m not sure I understood the question. First, the commitment to halakha is not on a moral basis (see the end of the fifth notebook and in the articles on ontic gratitude). Second, even if that were the case, you are asking a semantic question. It’s like when I was once asked if non-observance of a commandment constitutes a hole in the ship of all of us, so all commandments belong to the moral realm. This is semantically correct but irrelevant. When I argue for a separation between halakha and morality, I mean the purposes for which halakha was established and not specifically the motivations for which it is observed.
