What is the crumb rate?
peace,
Is a crumb that is warned against being eaten on Passover really a crumb like the tiny crumbs found in many places, or is a crumb, for example, something the size of a sesame seed – that is, something with some kind of substance?
For example, if I place matzah on Passover in a room on a surface that I haven’t cleaned in particular, and at a glance there isn’t a single crumb of chametz, but theoretically it’s possible that there are really small crumbs of chametz there from eating during the year (say, a millimeter by a millimeter in size), then should I be careful about such crumbs or only about something with some kind of substance?
I hope the question is clear, thanks.
The question is understandable. Chametz on Passover is forbidden to eat and enjoy, and its share is the same as the law for kezait. But there is a half-share law, as with all Torah prohibitions, and therefore there is a prohibition on eating even less than kezait. There is also a separate prohibition on a mixture of chametz.
And yet, from the explanation, it seems that there is a minimum size and there is no need to get hysterical. But you do need to clean as much as you can. I once heard Rabbi Ben Zion Abba Shaul asked whether it is permissible to drink water from the Sea of Galilee despite the fear that someone had thrown some bread there, and he replied that even “something” has a limit. But you can’t give a ration for this, of course, and the rule of thumb is to clean as much as you can without hysteria.
Is there no difference in the size of the decomposition between the prohibition of eating and the prohibition of not being seen?
Regarding Bel Yivarah, it is not clear that there is a prohibition of half a shiur. There is a contradiction in this in the Shul (on the law of dough in cracks in the areva) and the poskim are divided on this. But assuming that there is a half shiur in this as well, common sense prevails. Decide for yourself whether or not there is a difference. There is no way to answer this question.
Rabbi Eliyahu Zeini once stated that "when they talked about 'something,' they weren't talking about the quark level."
For the information of Rabbi Zaini, Quaker is also chametz
