Raising a scary dog
Hello Rabbi. I live in the community of Binyamin, on the edge of the community. To feel more secure and also to make it truly safer, we brought a dog for guarding purposes. The dog is not a dangerous breed, but it barks a lot and scares children. My dilemma: on the one hand, it scares children (who shouldn’t pose a danger to them at all) and on the other hand, if we get rid of it, we will be afraid.. I thought I would discuss from your previous life that your fear preceded the fear of others. What does the Rabbi think?
If the dog is confined and not endangering them, I think the children will get used to the barking and there’s no need to worry so much. I guess there’s no need for passersby to just get scared and don’t know the dog.
In principle, in a place where the dog is required due to danger and you have no other option, the consideration of intimidation does not negate your need. Just put up a clear, large sign announcing that there is a dog and that it is closed and not dangerous.
