Meaning of “A”
We see throughout the sources different references to the importance of Israel. I wanted to ask what the Rabbi thought about Israel, is there anything special about it and why? What does Israel represent for the Rabbi?
For me, Israel is a land like any other land, except that we have a commandment to settle it and dwell in it. That’s all. All the mysticism attached to it doesn’t sound well-founded to me. The Bible already speaks of a land on which the eyes of the Lord your God are upon it, in contrast to the land of Egypt. But this is true of any land that depends on rain and not on river water. Basically, this is a natural distinction. Of course, if the Holy One, blessed be He, chose this land for us to dwell in, then it now has a status, and perhaps even His eyes on it from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. But all of this is without regard to mysticism and special properties, which I have no idea about and I assume no one else does either.
In your opinion, there is no providence, and even in the past it was rare. Why are there more eyes of your God in the land that depends on rain than on the waters of the river?
I don't know what happened in the past.
