deception

asked 4 years ago

Hello Rabbi,
Does the rabbi have a definition for the term ‘fraud’? I tried to define it myself, but I found it unclear.
It seems to me that ‘fraud’ is not a lie, because not every time I lie I am accused of fraud.
Likewise, financial interest or personal gain also does not really meet the definition of fraud.
What do you think?
Thanks in advance.

I understand that you are talking about the term in Hebrew and not as a halakhic term. It seems to me that fraud is a lie that has consequences of harming others. In addition, it is also planned in advance, a plot. Usually also something that is not minor.

Fraud is the intentional causing/creation of a fact that is incorrect in the other's worldview. And the exploitation of the other's mistaken worldview for some gain.

Deception.
