Learning and memory methods

שו”תCategory: generalLearning and memory methods

Hey, I noticed that the rabbi is knowledgeable about a lot of topics and remembers a lot.
I would like to know if the rabbi has a particular method (methods?) when reading an article or a book, to remember the amount of material.
The Rabbi can probably say that when something is interesting or feels significant enough, it gets etched in my head, that’s true, but it doesn’t always work that way for me and I would like to know. There are many things that I know are important but they are not enjoyable and therefore I don’t remember the material studied. It will also probably be effective for exams.

Thank you very much.

I don’t have one. In addition to the fact that you need to be interested in the material, if it connects you to other topics and creates a web whose parts are connected, it helps you remember. It’s easier for someone who has a method to remember things, because they sort them by their location in the web (as well as the pros and cons of points in the web).
I’ll tell you a piece of advice I once received from my Maggid in Bnei Brak. We studied the issue of “God has already sanctified it” in the Sanhedrin. There I suggested a commentary on the issue that is not found in the Rishonim and Achronim, even though it is the simplest and most obvious interpretation, and I wondered why it was not said. He referred me to a book by Rabbi Eliezer Silver of Cincinnati, Anfei Erez, which gives this interpretation. I was surprised to see that he knew about this source, and told me that once many years ago he read it in the Chasrat Shatz in the mincha in a book that is in the Kollel Beit Yechiel (at the end of Rabbi Akiva Street). He also told me that there I could see the book (which was not there). I asked him how he remembered what he read in the Chasrat Shatz years ago, and I keep reading and not remembering. He told me that when he reads, he does so with attention to the material being read and not just to pass the time, and he also summarizes in his head what he has read (and thus also embeds it in his marg). This is the advice I have.

Thank you very much Rabbi for the informative answer.
Be strong and courageous.
I will try this, it seems like a good idea to me.
Have a good Shabbat 🙂
