Railway work on Saturday
Shalom Rabbi, the repair and maintenance work being done on the train on Shabbat is making headlines again. The assumption is that if it is not done on Shabbat, it will be done on a weekday and will cause huge traffic jams and great damage to the economy. Can it be argued that since such huge traffic jams can also increase the possibility of cases of Pikuach Nefesh, then it is permissible to perform these operations on Shabbat in the first place? Should the discussion in such a case even be based on the normal rules of Pikuach Nefesh?
I just finished a series of columns about police operations and actions required of the public on Shabbat. See there. In the recent talkbacks there, the question arose about the railway works.
Not only the loss of life or the loss of money from many desecrates the Sabbath
but also the loss of money from many desecrates the Sabbath
as explained in the Tosefta and the right-hand page of the 14th chapter.
Of course, money from many
but money from an individual, even if many, do not desecrate the Sabbath.
Not only does Pikuach Nefesh or Speku desecrate Shabbat
also the loss of money of many desecrates Shabbat
as explained in the Tosefta and in the right-hand page of the 3rd chapter.
Of course, the money of many.
But the money of an individual, even a lot of money, does not desecrate Shabbat.
Correction of an error. Right-hand page, point 17.
