Abortion of a child with a disability
Hello Rabbi
I wanted to know what the Rabbi’s opinion is on the abortion of a child who is known during pregnancy to have a severe disability, such as a retardation/disability, if in his opinion the child’s life and the family’s life were not good because of it.
I have written here more than once about abortions and you can search. In general, in my opinion abortion is murder, even if not halakhically, then morally. Although in a place where the child is going to live a life of severe suffering, it has a place for its own benefit. But not for the benefit of anyone else (including its parents).
And if he is alive, are you also in favor of euthanasia? Without his will? (And if he has no knowledge)
not.
But if abortion is murder, then who hates whether born or unborn?
This is moral murder. But morally, the quality of life of the fetus also has value, and there is room to permit one against the other. Even halachically, when it comes to the prohibition of suicide and murder, King Saul committed suicide in order not to fall into the hands of his enemies, and there are rabbis who learn from this a general permit.
