Clarification regarding Shabbat study

Is it permissible to study secular studies (English, mathematics) on Shabbat when the studies are not for the purpose of proper studies (I am not in university), but rather a combination of a desire to know and learn for self-enrichment, and a desire to facilitate future studies if they occur?
