Pride

asked 9 months ago

Hello Rabbi,
Is it okay to feel proud of things I have (money/beauty…)?
I know in my head that’s what it is, but I don’t really feel that way in my heart.

There is nothing to be proud of here.

Yes, you can feel pride and probably about something. Beauty requires maintenance and care. If you eat like a mammoth and live like a mole, you will look like one, and it won’t help. Also, unless you are from a family of millionaires whose other family members will gladly cover your debts, money can also be wasted on nonsense and it takes self-control to preserve it and certainly to make more of it.

If a warning is needed about anything related to pride, it is a warning about excessive pride. Don’t get too carried away. Between getting completely carried away by yourself and becoming useless to the world, there is a very wide area in which you can find your place and be okay with being there.
