Haredi ideology: another look
In a column that dealt with the definition of Haredi ideology, a fascinating definition was proposed (finally someone writes what I think), but in my opinion another distinction is missing, and it concerns Torah study. The Datal, who may observe the halakha in its entirety more than any Haredi, perceives Torah study as a mitzvah among the mitzvot and as a field of study among the fields (just as a doctor or a lawyer needs a poske so that we know how to behave). The Haredi perceives Torah study as another part besides halakha as a central root in his life, therefore he is willing to sacrifice even many mitzvot for the benefit of his study. This distinction should be thought about before judging it. It corresponds to most of the cases I know of and I see it as an ideological distinction.
