What about the implications of this belief, eating the symbols on Rosh Hashanah night? Do the Sages have formal authority to mandate this (if it is considered halakhic) even if the reasoning is incorrect? Is this the same as regulations that have their purpose invalidated but not necessarily their law invalidated?
It is only doubtful whether this is a law. But even if it is, it is invalid since the basis does not appear to be correct.
