Hello. In principle, no. Today it is a custom, and the custom also has halakhic status (Do not forsake your mother’s teachings).

Perhaps it depends on the dispute whether the text of the prayer is "There will always be a man who fears God in secret (and openly)," which, according to those who add openly, means that a man should announce to the world that he fears God, and therefore in our day a kippah is needed, and robes are not necessary.
