What do you think about the custom of atonement in general? Is it worth keeping, and what is its purpose? Isn’t it pagan?

It is written in the Poskim not to use the internal organs but to throw them on the roofs for the benefit of the birds, to remind them of His “mercy for all His deeds.”
An amusing anecdote:
There are places in Bnei Brak where you can slaughter the bird for “atonement” and receive it plucked and ready for “salting.”
Someone took advantage of the opportunity, stood there and asked the “atonement” people for the “liver” of the bird, for him.
I saw him ask his friend for the liver, and he refused. The other person could not give the liver, because he had to perform the “custom” as his correction, in order to receive atonement.
