Visionary and Moral
Hello.
Is it correct to say that the Hazon Ish understood that there is no need for human morality and that we are satisfied with the morality expressed in the Torah and Halacha? And did the great scholars who disagreed with him believe that human morality is also necessary, or did they believe that a more comprehensive Torah morality should be found than dry Halacha?
Not true. Apparently, it seems so from his booklet Faith and Confidence in the Example of the Teachers. But if you read it carefully, you will see that he believes the opposite. In the order of Halacha and Mosar in the recorded lessons, I deal with this za’a.
The fundamental reason this is not possible is that morality and halakha are two independent categories (at least that is my opinion), and the verse “Do what is right and good” instructs us to act morally without defining what it is. The assumption is that natural morality is what the Torah expects of us.
