A prophecy that is clearly a prophecy
Hello Rabbi,
In the series on mysticism, you said, if I'm not mistaken, that whoever receives a prophecy understands that it is indeed a prophecy.
But, for example, Gideon asked for proof from the angel.
Not that I think that tomorrow anyone here will receive a prophecy, so the question is more theoretical: If you are mistaken in your assessment, and I do not feel a clear feeling that this is indeed a prophecy, what test would you ask the angel to perform that would prove to you that this is indeed a prophecy and not some sorcerer, illusionist, or madness coming from the head?
It seems to me that today, Gideon's test, for example, would not have convinced me.
Gideon apparently wanted the certainty that a prophet usually has (since a prophet does not ask for evidence). Gideon was not a prophet either. God did not speak to him.
Interesting.
Why is speaking with an angel not considered prophecy? It seems to me that the Rambam says that all the other prophets prophesied through an angel (not that the Rambam is right), but it seems to me that the general perception is that speaking with an angel is considered prophecy.
Are you actually defining prophecy as a direct speech from God to the prophet?
Just a semantic question. Define it however you want. I argued that inner certainty is perhaps created by speaking with God, not with an angel.
good,
As Maimonides said: "And man did not know that they would be until they were."
And for the matter of an angel, what would you ask to know that it is indeed an angel and not a fake or madness?
I don't know. As I explained, only when I'm in the situation will I know what convinces me.
The rabbi said that God did not speak to Gideon, but rather the angel.
Read Judges Chapter 6
And the LORD turned to him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel out of the hand of Midian: have I not sent thee?
In the literal sense of the verses, the speaker is the angel and not God Himself. Although Rashi wrote differently there, most commentators interpreted it as an angel.
