50 ₪
Some of my coworkers are not Jewish.
I saw 50 NIS rolling around, I picked it up, I turned this way and that, and saw that there was no one there.
No sign. A few hours later, one of the workers turned to me (probably not just me) and pointed to the place where the loss was in the yard and asked if I had seen 50 NIS. I said no and ignored him. He seemed simply sorry for the loss of a coin + money that is not a sign + a place that is not a sign. So at first I said no, but when I saw that he was sorry, there was reasonable reason to assume that he was the one who lost it. Should I go to him?
Now I will also come out as a liar and a cheat, and I will answer him on the other hand, apparently in Chinese, I am exempt, and I will also come out as a blasphemer of God.
What to do?
A Gentile today has a complete obligation to return a lost item, in my opinion, just like a Jew. This is according to the words of the Meiri (and in my opinion, the Rambam also suspends the permission not to return to Gentiles on the basis that they do not return lost items). Regarding money that does not have a mark, the opinion of the Sages is more favorable than that of someone who returns it, meaning that there is a moral obligation even if I did not follow the Halakhah. Therefore, in my opinion, you should return it to him, at least if God allows it.
You can answer him through someone else. Let them post that they found money and ask the loser to come and get it. Or you can tell him that you only found it after he talked to you.
