A stone with powers

שו”תCategory: HalachaA stone with powers
asked 3 years ago

Hello Rabbi,
I received a small stone as a gift that has the “power” to help a person with their emotions and to be loved more. I don’t believe in the power of the stone, but am I allowed to wear it around my neck for beauty or is that idolatry?

There’s nothing wrong with wearing it for decoration. It’s just that people make the mistake of thinking it helps with something, so what? Is alternative medicine a taboo? No, that’s just nonsense.

By the way, there's also no problem with wearing it for a relief operation if someone believes in it. He's probably a fool, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Rabbi,

Doesn't Maimonides forbid the matter of witchcraft because of stupidity?

מיכי Staff replied 3 years ago

Yes, but it is quite clear that he is not claiming that all stupidity is forbidden by the Torah. If a person thinks that a stone is naturally beneficial in some way or another, he is mistaken and perhaps also stupid. It is unlikely to consider him a criminal.
