Appearance on Shabbat
peace. The Shulchan Arbiter ruled that if you let a Gentile do a job and you cut wages with him, there is no problem with that, since a Gentile works on his own accord, but if you did not cut wages with him, he is prohibited from doing your job for fear of the appearance of being said to be the one who hired the Gentile. And I wanted to know if the reason it is prohibited is the appearance of being, what difference does it make if he cut wages?

Shalom Shahar. When you cut wages with him, he is a contractor, and then he works on his own behalf and at the time he sees fit. It is his decision when to work. But if you did not cut wages, then he is a worker (employee) and not a contractor, and then it seems that you are sending him to do work on Shabbat. See Mab Si' Ranev Skib 14 and 15.
