censor

asked 5 years ago

It is known that because of the censor, the phrase “worship of idols” throughout the Talmud was changed to “worship of gods.” And indeed, in the De’Fur and manuscript it is written “worship of idols.” And one must wonder how the censor allowed the name of the tractate itself, “worship of idols,” to be printed in the Vilna Shas, and not just on the title page, but on every page??!!

If it also appears in the report then it really is a scam.

Wikipedia quotes from an (initial) essay on censorship rules: "Any word 'idolatry' that is not understood to refer specifically to the word that already existed in detail (which existed before Jesus), will be written in its place, as in: 'worshippers of stars and signs'. Of course, if it is understood to refer to the word that existed before the coming of our Lord, there is nothing in it."
And even if later they censored all the words 'idolatry' (I do not know), it must be said that the last generation of censors did not want to be strict about something that was explicitly permitted in the publication of the teachings of the first censors.
