Cleaning from “visible” worms
Hello Rabbi,
There is the halacha, and I would be happy to be corrected if I am wrong, that it is forbidden to eat worms that are visible to the eye, but worms that are not, are permitted when there is no knowledge of them.
When cleaning, they usually show videos where you take some fruit or vegetable and then put it in water and soak it and see all the insects that are there.
The problem with this example is that the insects are removed from the place where they are most visible or invisible. You can’t take a vegetable and perform a chemical action that removes it from there onto a white surface and say that the insect is visible. This is not the place we are talking about. We are talking about the vegetable. And so, in my opinion, you have to look at the lettuce or any other fruit or vegetable, look closely and see if there is an insect or not. If you see one, you remove it and eat it. If not, you eat it right away.
There is no reason to wash the vegetable with soap, but rather with water as you would wash it without the halacha about the worms and eat it.
What is the Rabbi’s opinion on the matter?
