Cleaning from “visible” worms

שו”תCategory: HalachaCleaning from “visible” worms
asked 2 years ago

Hello Rabbi,
There is the halacha, and I would be happy to be corrected if I am wrong, that it is forbidden to eat worms that are visible to the eye, but worms that are not, are permitted when there is no knowledge of them.
When cleaning, they usually show videos where you take some fruit or vegetable and then put it in water and soak it and see all the insects that are there.
The problem with this example is that the insects are removed from the place where they are most visible or invisible. You can’t take a vegetable and perform a chemical action that removes it from there onto a white surface and say that the insect is visible. This is not the place we are talking about. We are talking about the vegetable. And so, in my opinion, you have to look at the lettuce or any other fruit or vegetable, look closely and see if there is an insect or not. If you see one, you remove it and eat it. If not, you eat it right away.
There is no reason to wash the vegetable with soap, but rather with water as you would wash it without the halacha about the worms and eat it.
What is the Rabbi’s opinion on the matter?

There is no such halakha. There is a prohibition against eating insects. Several poskim wrote that the prohibition does not apply to insects that are not visible to the eye. The explanation for this is that a reasonable person has no control in such a situation. Therefore, it makes sense to measure this on the fruit itself. Although there was room to argue that the explanation is different: if you cannot see them, then they are not significant insects and therefore there is no prohibition. According to this, even if you see them on another surface, they are still visible and they are prohibited. Therefore, if there is a possibility to ensure that the fruit you eat does not also contain such insects, it is better. By the way, the videos show this on a surface that will be clear in the photo. This does not mean that these insects are not visible on the fruit itself. I didn’t understand the question about washing with soap.
