Commitment to Halacha

שו”תCategory: HalachaCommitment to Halacha

Hello,

You wrote this in one of your articles:
“Before even beginning the discussion, I find it my duty to preface this by saying that, contrary to the understanding of Halacha implicit in your question, the decision in every area of life, including Halacha, is yours and no one else’s. Even where Halacha unequivocally says so, you are the one who must decide whether to comply with this obligation or not. This is not a privilege, or any kind of privilege, but an obligation that the Torah imposes on us, in its words, “And you chose life.”

I didn’t understand exactly when we should comply with the Torah’s requirements and when not. Why did you choose life?

We must always listen to the voice of the Torah, but this decision must come from us. If a person is hypnotized and fulfills all the commandments, this is not listening to the voice of the Torah. If he does this not out of a decision to obey but to preserve the spirit of the people (Ahad Ha’am), it has no halakhic value. Obedience to the Torah is only when it is done out of my own decision and out of recognition of the obligation to obey.
