Creation of the world

שו”תCategory: Torah and ScienceCreation of the world
asked 1 year ago

How is it possible that the Torah tells us that God created the heavens and the earth first (on the first day), and the sun, moon, and stars later on the fourth day, when we know from radiometric dating that the sun, and many other stars (entire galaxies in fact), were created long before the Earth? The first galaxies existed since 1-2 billion years after the Big Bang, and the Earth was created only 9 billion years after the Big Bang.
The creation of the world is a parable, right?

It’s probably not a historical description. Beyond that, when you talk about creation in terms of days, then they weren’t created together.

Who was not created together? The days and the creations?

מיכי Staff replied 1 year ago

The Earth and the stars. Depends on what we're talking about (those are stars). The time differences are meaningless when the true scale is billions of years.

But in no way does the story square with reality. If the stars were created first, it contradicts the obvious, and no one has said that. If the stars were created after, it contradicts reality.

Why do I need to repeat what I have already written? This story seems like an educational myth rather than a factual description. Therefore, it should be discussed conceptually rather than historically-scientifically.
