Cruise ship on Saturday

שו”תCategory: HalachaCruise ship on Saturday
asked 2 years ago

Hello Rabbi,
Is it permissible to go on a pleasure cruise on a Sunday, when the cruise is scheduled for 7 nights and 8 days, meaning that the cruise will also fall on Shabbat? Does it matter who the ship’s operators are (Jews or not), and who the majority of the passengers are (Jews or not).
Best regards,

In my opinion, it is forbidden when the ship’s operators are Jewish, since the sailors desecrate Shabbat for the passengers (at least if most of the passengers are Jewish, and in my opinion even if not). If the sailors are Gentiles, when most of the passengers are Jewish, it is forbidden on the three days that follow Shabbat. On the first days of the week, there may be room for permission.
