I wanted to ask the Honorable Rabbi two questions.
1) According to today’s findings, is there a basis for what is written in Rambam and Berech Vital that every body and soul are composed of elements?
2) Where exactly does Maimonides write that if Aristotle had strong evidence for the pre-existence of the world, we would have pushed the verses to the beginning of the Book of Genesis?
- The Aristotelian concept of the four elements does not speak of an actual composition of earth, wind, and fire, but rather of doses of properties. A light thing has a lot of the wind and fire component and a little of the earth component, etc. I don’t think they were talking about physical elements that make up matter, but it’s worth asking experts in Greek physics. But why does it even matter? Why is it interesting whether there is substance in these words of Maimonides or not?
- In the MUN CHB PCH.
On the same subject, I will also ask: Why do people insist on clinging to Greek science, some of which the Rambam and the Sages included in their books, as if it were about spiritual things that are part of the Torah and not just science that is constantly changing?
