Despair from losing in the market of most of Israel
Hello Rabbi,
The Gemara in Bava Metzia, page 24, page 1, says:
And so Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar used to say: He who saves from the lion and from the bear and from the leopard and from the cheetah, and from the mire of the sea and the puddle of a river, who finds himself in a large river and a large pond, and wherever many are mentioned there – these are his, because the owners despair of them. Iba’u said: Because Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar said – in the majority of Gentiles, but in the majority of Israel – no, or perhaps: Who said even in the majority of Israel?
Tosafot interpret: Even in most of Israel, it is said – “May it be peaceful and quiet, because here is a woman who is not above me, and I will weigh her down.”
At first glance, this seems puzzling, since there are indeed women who are not above me, but most of Israel is above me, and every divorce is more than a divorce. And beyond that, if the owner of the lost item despairs because he is hanging it because someone who is not decent found the lost item, why doesn’t he hang it like that in a place that is not public domain? After all, there are women who are not above me there too.
