Determinism and prayer

שו”תCategory: faithDeterminism and prayer
asked 9 years ago

Hello Rabbi.
If we accept the assumption that the laws of nature, including the laws of physics, are deterministic, what place is there for prayer that involves the Creator in nature? In other words, is there any point in praying for rain at all, if we assume that all meteorological behavior is deterministic?
Unless we assume that the Creator intervenes in nature and its conduct, then the question does not arise at all.

I have already written about this several times here. In short, I say that in my opinion, God does not intervene in the ordinary, but it is possible that sometimes He does (I do not know how one notices this). Therefore, there is a problem with the part of the requests in the prayer, and at most one can try to see if He will intervene, but I would not count on it. The praise and confessions are more understandable. The praise is for the creation of the world and its laws. The confession about something that happened to me can be explained as when something happens to me, I thank God for creating the world and the laws of nature by virtue of which it happened to me. There is no problem with the other parts of the prayer.
