Does it make sense to decide a dress code based on whims?
I saw an article today about a case where female schoolgirls arrived in very short shorts and were left outside the classroom (https://m.ynet.co.il/Articles/5732740), and as usual, the topic of why boys are allowed when girls are not allowed was added, and I have two questions.
1. Is it possible to decide on a dress code for girls according to the desires of boys, and is it the same thing the other way around? It also seems that girls don’t tease boys to the same extent.
2. The article includes a picture of the students and I saw that the vast majority of the comments claim that this attire is appropriate and modest. What do you think about that?
I don’t accept these idiotic claims that what is allowed for men is allowed for women (as in the protest of the women who work in the Knesset). This is nonsense of political correctness that has no basis.
By the way, it’s not just a question of boys’ desires but what is considered respectable clothing. There is a connection because desires may be related to the definition of respectable clothing, but desires are not necessarily the reason. Is a man allowed to wear a dress to court or the Knesset? I think there will be quite a few who will accept the prohibition on that.
I'm completely in favor of them wearing shorts. Short pants for a girl are not the same as a dress a man would wear. It's clothing that suits her. They're hot and it's a burden for them to wear longer clothing. As for the urge, it comes and develops from the very prohibition. "If you've seen her, don't think about her," isn't that a logical contradiction? There's an island where everyone walks naked. And if you talk to them about the "urge" that we know in our culture, they wouldn't know what you want. They look in the eyes, not somewhere else. It's all a matter of culture and habit.
Rabbi, do long pants for a woman violate the laws of modesty in your opinion?
A. You understand girls the same way you understand passions.
right.
Pants have two aspects: a man's tool and modesty. Women's pants are not a problem. And pants that are not too tight are not a problem of modesty. As for modest unisex, I also think it is permissible.
Rabbi,
There is a lecturer (male) at the Open University named Zvi Lahav, who gives lectures (a course on “Personality” in psychology) while wearing a dress with a low neckline, his lips painted red, wearing a necklace, etc.
Would it bother you to learn from such a lecturer?
If so, how would you formulate an appeal to the university administration? What would you write?
I suppose it would have bothered me, but I don't think I would have turned away.
If you were asked to draft a letter to management, what arguments would you make?
