Double standards – veganism and abortion

שו”תCategory: moralDouble standards – veganism and abortion
asked 7 years ago

Does the rabbi/doctor consider vegans who oppose the total consumption of animal products (for moral reasons of suffering, etc.) and at the same time hold (at least many of them) the position that abortion (at any stage of pregnancy where abortion is possible) is morally legitimate people who hold an inconsistent moral position? After all, if the murder/killing/death of a cow is forbidden because we like steak (personal reasons of convenience), does it make sense to abort/murder a baby (unplanned or planned but unwanted for whatever reason) because it doesn’t fit our current lifestyle? PS: My position on the morality of abortion is not yet sufficiently solidified.

If it is about opposing animal products because of suffering, then it has nothing to do with abortion. The prohibition on abortion is not because of the suffering of the fetus. It seems to me that it can be done without suffering, and it is doubtful whether a fetus really suffers in such an act. There are those who oppose the use of animal products in principle, but that is another story.
